Industry: Organic farms may buy up to 20% non-organic roughage
In short
From 24 August 2026, organic farms across Switzerland may cover up to 20% of the total feed needs of roughage-fed livestock with purchased non-organic roughage, measured as dry matter. The Federal Office for Agriculture’s drought exemption includes grazing on non-organic land within the same limit and lasts through 2026.
What it means for suppliers
- Non-organic roughage can be supplied to organic farms to cover up to 20% of roughage-fed livestock’s total feed needs, on a dry-matter basis.
- Grazing on non-organic land counts towards the same allowance, leaving less room for purchased non-organic roughage.
- This supply option applies throughout Switzerland but is limited to the 2026 calendar year.
