GTIN (EAN barcode)
The Global Trade Item Number is the unique number that identifies a product worldwide. The 13-digit version is printed as the EAN-13 barcode scanned at the checkout.
Why it matters
Retailers generally won't list a packaged product without a valid GTIN. It links your product to orders, deliveries and the retailer's sales data.
How it works
A company licenses a GS1 company prefix, adds its own item reference, and ends with a check digit, for a total of 13 digits (GS1).
In Switzerland
GTINs are licensed by GS1 Switzerland (GS1 Switzerland).
